Guix Foundation is a non-profit whose goal is to support the GNU Guix project and more generally to promote software that respects user freedom.

We're registered in France (SIRET number is 943 920 306 00017) as a non-profit volunteer Association. An Association is a form of non-profit where the members fund, prioritise and organise our activities. This means that our members directly support Guix and the community around it. As a members-driven non-profit, any one is welcome to join and support out mission.

What we do

To understand what we do lets start by explaining why GNU Guix needs support.

GNU Guix, like many Free Software projects, is a global community of volunteers. The project incurs costs for development infrastructure, facilitating developer collaboration and supporting the community around the project. As a package manager and GNU/Linux distribution Guix has some unique needs. As the distribution grows and becomes more popular the costs also grow. Each package that's added to the distribution increases the number of builds. And, as more people use Guix the cost of delivering those packages also grows.

Unlike a corporate backed project, Guix is entirely funded by the donations of individual supporters and relies on the support of the community.

The project has two fiscal sponsor organisations, the FSF and Guix Foundation. As fiscal sponsors both organisations accept donations and hold assets on behalf of the project. All donations, through either fiscal sponsor are used to support the Guix project.

Guix Foundation runs fundraising campaigns to raise funds to support the development of Guix and the community around it. Guix's infrastructure, hosting and developer events are organised and paid for through Guix Foundation. As a small, volunteer team running everything through one organisation makes it easier to organise. We also organise events, promoting Guix to users and supporting the wider Guix community.

How we do it

Guix Foundation accepts donations through a variety of payment platforms or during in-person events. If you'd like to donate there's more details on the Donate page. As a certified non-profit your donation may qualify for tax relief.

From our fundraising we organise our spending into these priorities:

This is the most critical category as it covers hosting for the GNU Guix web site, the build farms which build packages, and the servers which provide those packages to users.

As a highly distributed community of developers and users we run events for Guix contributors to come together, collaborate and learn from each other.

We want to build a healthy, sustainable and active community around Guix by attracting new users and making it fun for existing users.

We can accelerate the development of Guix by sponsoring the development of new capabilities and maintaining existing code.
