How does Guix Foundation support GNU Guix?

GNU Guix is a Free Software project that's independent from any company or institution. The project relies on the support of it's community to fund the essential infrastructure and resources it needs.

The Guix project has two fiscal sponsors who collect donations to fund the project. Donating through either the Free Software Foundation (FSF) or Guix Foundation supports the GNU Guix project.

Guix Foundation is a non-profit that's dedicated to supporting the development and use of GNU Guix. It's a volunteer association, so our members support Guix and organise the Foundation's activities.

How is Guix Foundation related to the FSF?

Both the FSF and Guix Foundation are fiscal sponsors for GNU Guix. You can donate to Guix through either the FSF or Guix Foundation. Donations through either will be used to support and promote GNU Guix.

Guix's infrastructure, hosting and developer events are organised and paid for through Guix Foundation. As a small, volunteer team running everything through one organisation makes it easier to organise. Consequently, the project regularly transfers donations that are made through the FSF into Guix Foundation.

<div id="Q8">

How much money are you trying to raise?

The Sustain and Strengthen GNU Guix fundraising campaign estimated that the minimum level the project needs for critical infrastructure is 15000 Euros per year. We aim to be sustainable meaning that we're only spending as much in a year as we raise. Recurring donations are particularly important because they provide a regular stream of funds that can pay for the hosting and shared resources (e.g. build servers) that all Guix users rely on.

The more funding there is, the more we'll be able to strengthen Guix. Whether that's improving the project's infrastructure, sponsoring development or supporting the Guix community.

With the help of our fantastic donators we estimate that we'll raise almost 34,000 Euros during 2026. But, there's lots more we could do, so we hope you'll consider donating!
