How we're organised

Guix Foundation is a volunteer Association under French law, meaning that our members organise, decide and run all aspects of it. We're able to fulfill our mission due to the energy and dedication of our volunteers.

Associations are a form of non-profit whose activities support civil society. To encourage fundraising donations are granted tax dispensations and we receive tax relief to support our activities. As an Association, Guix Foundation is similar to non-profits in other countries e.g. USA 501(c). The governance model is that the Association is members-driven:

• Anyone can donate to support the our mission. Those that want to be actively involved can join Guix Foundation and become a member. In the same way that Guix users and developers are every where we accept members from all parts of the globe (no space bourne members yet!).

• Members elect an organising committee (called the Solidarity Administration Council). The SAC are responsible for prioritising activities and representing the members.

• Members also vote for a President and Treasurer (called the Bureau) who represent the Foundation externally and organise the finances.

• Members propose ideas, priorities and proposals for Guix Foundation. They organise events, educational activity and ensure we support the development and use of Guix.

The Foundation is run following our by-laws:

• Guix Foundation Statutes: The statutes set out the mission and regulations for organising the Association. The original French regulations are the binding version. They're also available translated into English.

• Interior Reglementary: These set out some specific additional ways of working (e.g. meetings can be electronic) which have been agreed by the Association. The original French version is available, along with an English translation.

General Assemblies

All members of the Association come together at the annual General Assembly to elect the SAC (Solidarity Adminstrative Council) and to direct the future of the Association.

The ordinary General Assembly takes place annually. The Bureau provide a report on the Foundation's activities and financial health. Members can put themselves forward to join the SAC, where they will be responsible for organising the activities of the Foundation. Additionally, any member may put forward a proposal at the AGM.

An Extraordinary General Assembly may modify the statutes or instigate the dissolution of the Association. These only take place in certain limited scenarios and require a particular quorum. There's more details in the Statutes (see above).

Solidarity Administrative Council

The Solidarity Administrative Council (SAC) governs the Association. It authorises and organises the activities:

• organising activities within the principles set in the regulations and any General Assembly. Examples are organising fundraising activities and supporting GNU Guix by sponsoring activities.

• preparing financial statements and ensuring the health of Guix Foundation. Examples of this activity are organising different platforms for donations and ensuring that the accounts are kept correctly.

• preparing modifications to the Association's rules and regulations, to be voted on at the appropriate Assembly.

The SAC consists of the President and Treasurer (the Board) and a number of members who are voted onto the SAC at the AGM. It meets regularly, often quarterly, and at least once a year.

Proposals for activities that support Guix Foundation's mission can be put forward to the SAC at any time, decisions are taken with a majority of votes.

Bureau

The President and Treasurer represent the Foundation in all legal, public and financial matters. They put into action the plans as agreed by the SAC. If you have a query or question about Guix Foundation they'll try and find the answer.

French law requires there to be well-identified public representatives of the Association who are responsible for the legal and financial administration. Within those boundaries our aim is to have a collegiate and collective governance approach. In fact, all decisions are taken by the Solidary Administrative Council, to which any member of the association wishing to take responsibility for its functioning can be elected.

Guix Foundation History

Guix Foundation started life as Guix Europe in 2016. It came about due to many Guix developers and supporters wanting to assist in the growth of Guix.

In 2017

In 2025 Guix Europe was closed down and Guix Foundation was started, all members and assets were transferred to the new Association. This change reflected a new phase in Guix Foundation with an increase in the number of members and the desire to support Guix globally where the Guix Foundation name demonstrates that more clearly.
